Artist's Comments

a vector done in illustrator for my class tshirt.
used [link] and [link] as references.
still pretty inexperienced with vectors, so i'd appreciate critiques / comments on:

1. the overall style / look
2. the two faces, and whether anything looks off
3. ideas for improvement

please comment, thank you!
(something went wrong with the submission so i had to resubmit twice, sorry if it caused any trouble)

wow! this is realy ausome, especialy for a beginner with vectors.

One thing that annoyed me a bit was how the guy and girl kinda clash. The boy seems very clean cut and real, while the girl looks more abstract and stylistic. I find both to be very cool and very well done, but don't mix the two together. Either give the guy some intense shading and different line widths, or even out the girl and give her some more detail.

It also kinda annoyed me that the guy has eyes and the girl doesn't. Mabey give him some sunglasses or somthing.

Please dont' take this critique the wrong way. I realy do think this is an amazing piece already. (a hell of a lot better than I could do :) )

Just saw this off of Digikitten...

Awesomeness! I am agreeing with kitsune though, I think you should actually not include the outline of the guy, only leaving then shadows.

Form/Composition - I've kept in mind that this is an illustration for a class t-shirt and have came up with the following. The composition works in its entirety, but there are some things that could be worked on detail. For example, the amount of detail applied on the male face isn't reflected in the face on the right. Vector art attempts to simplify an image through shapes and color, the creation of depth is done through the application of one color next to another instead of a gradient blend from dark to light. The depth in the mail face seems to be generated from a light source from the right and underneath the face. The face on the right is lacking in details that would reflect this light source. If the face on the right was showing the existing light source and the same about of detail on the face on the left this may give the view more to look at. I checked out your reference photos. The female face does have the details I'm referring to. Another thing to consider is possibly lowering the female face so the left edge of the hat’s rim meets the male head at the hair/neck line and then includes more of your color above the female hat, or you could move the bottom color/shapes slightly over to the right to help pull your yes down off of the blank face. I haven't tried this myself, but it may be something to try just for the sake of trying.

Color - Keep in mind what I said about Vector art above. The colors work well enough here to not warrant a change at all. As an experiment, I'd look through the palette and simply do paint dumps in these areas as an experiment. You may find that there are colors that you like better, or you may find that these are the colors that you like the most. When dealing with 4 colors it isn't hard to change things back to where they started. Just think of it as a variation on a central them.

Contrast - Vector art is nothing more that contrasts, one color next to another. This category doesn't really apply when you think about the nature of the technique.

Fluidity - The image flows, well enough except for the white area that is the female face. There are no lines to pull your through this white spot. My eye continually gets pulled back to that spot and there isn't anything to bring me out of it. As an experiment, take your hand and lay it over the female figure to completely remove her from the image and then take your hand away. Your eye returns to the open area. You have working composition on left side of the page without the female. Now move your hand to the left hand side of the page and cover the male. You should see lettering and a female head without your composition included.

Proportions - Nothing is out of place in this category that I can see.

Subject Matter/Social Context - The image conveys youth, and does a good job. Colors, shapes, and styles all contribute to this.
